Do speech therapists assess cognitive loss in older people?

Do speech therapists assess cognitive loss and memory issues in older people? Our friend is in a rehab facility after an in-patient admission for a "raging" UTI. She was very confused...more so than earlier. She has been diagnosed recently with vascular dementia and has started on Memantine.
